From October 15 to 23, 2021, Field Research in Tanzania

From October 15 to 23, Ivanchenko Oksana Vasilyevna carried out a research in Tanzania, which was a continuation of the study within the framework of the RFBR grant No. 20-09-00361 "Cultural memory of the XIX century Arab slave trade and its influence on interethnic relations in modern Tanzania." During the research, 3 settlements were visited: Dar es Salaam, Kilosa, Mbwamaji, where 6 interviews were taken.

June 08-25, 2021, Field Research in Tanzania

From June 08 to June 25, 2021 Banshchikova Anastasia Alekseevna, Bryndina Valentina Nikolaevna and Ivanchenko Oksana Vasilievna conducted an expedition to Tanzania. This visit was a continuation of a study dedicated to Tanzanians’ cultural memories about the XIX century Arab-Swahili slave trade. This time the geography of the research was extended to southern regions of the country.

In November 2020 the Fourth season of field research in the United Republic of Tanzania

In November 2020 Valentina N. Bryndina accomplished the fourth season of field research in the United Republic of Tanzania, dedicated to the historical memory of the Arab slave trade and Сolonial rule in Zanzibar. The researcher has conducted interviews in several districts of the Island (Stone town, Mtendeni, Mbweni). Work has continued among worshippers of Anglican church in Mbweni which directly related to history of the slave trade in the island.

August-September 2020 The third season of field research in the United Republic of Tanzania

In August-September 2020 Anastasia A. Banshchikova, Oxana V. Ivanchenko and Valentine N. Bryndina accomplished the third season of field research in the United Republic of Tanzania, dedicated to the historical memory of the Arab slave trade. The researchers have conducted interviews in Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo and Zanzibar, with parishioners of the Anglican Church of Zanzibar. The latter interviews are of particular interest, since a significant part of the worshippers are descendants of slaves.
