March 31, 2026 Scientific seminar «Colonialism and the Struggle for Independence in the History of Algeria: From the Idea of the 'Arab Kingdom' by Napoleon III to the Support of the ANDR for Anti-Colonial Movements in Southern Africa»

On March 31, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Moscow time) the scientific seminar «Colonialism and the Struggle for Independence in the History of Algeria: From the Idea of the 'Arab Kingdom' by Napoleon III to the Support of the ANDR for Anti-Colonial Movements in Southern Africa» will take place.

The meeting will be held as part of the seminar «Culture and Society» at the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology, with the participation of Prof. Dr. Moncef Bakail, director of the African studies laboratory, University of Algiers 2, and Dr Abed Soufiane, member of the laboratory of African Studies at Algiers 2 University.

In the first part (at 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Moscow time)): report by A.E. Lazutina, PhD, Research Fellow of the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology «France's Colonial Policy in Algeria in the 1860s: The Idea of an 'Arab Kingdom' by Napoleon III». The discussion will be led by Prof. Dr. Moncef Bakail, director of the African studies laboratory, University of Algiers 2

In the second part (at 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Moscow time)): a report by Prof. Dr. Moncef Bakail, director of the African studies laboratory, University of Algiers 2 «On Algeria's Support for the Anti-Colonial Struggle in Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia): 1950s – 1990s».

The discussion will be led by Dr. V.G. Shubin, Principal Research Fellow of the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology.

The working languages of the seminar are Russian, English, and French.
