Based on the materials from field research conducted by the authors in Zanzibar, Pemba, and the mainland part of Tanzania in 2018-2024, the monograph examines historical memory of the Arab-Swahili slave trade of the 19th century and its impact on contemporary interethnic and interracial relations in the country. It explores the factors shaping the perception of this tragic chapter of the past among various population groups, sources of information about the slave trade, distortions of historical reality that appear both in Tanzanian school textbooks and in respondents’ answers, as well as the interweaving of slave trade and colonial discourses. The work is intended for ethnologists, anthropologists, historians specializing in Africa, experts on historical memory, and all those interested in the history and social anthropology of Tanzania and Africa as a whole.
